In the ancient practice of Ayurveda, turmeric is renowned for its properties of activation, of awakening the internal fires. In the tradition of yoga, it is commonly indicated for the activation of the solar plexus chakra, which rules over the digestive system and is the psychic body of the ego and one’s intestinal fortitude. Because of these ancient practices, I find myself often reaching for turmeric during the heyday of summer, when the sun is high and the body is seeking activity.
As we descend headlong into the depths of winter here in the Northern Hemisphere, I find myself asking, “where is our beloved turmeric’s place here?” How can its solar powered frequency stay with us as the days become shorter and shorter? Where is its place in the flavors of the fall and winter? To answer that question, I go back to the basics. I take the chill off of a cool evening with the preparation of a simple Golden Milk Latte. A few spoonfuls of pumpkin puree that are leftover from another recipe catch my eye in the corner of the fridge. I add it to my simmering Golden Milk latte, and adjust my seasonings and sweeteners to compliment the strength of the turmeric and the silkiness of the pumpkin. What results is a beautiful Turmeric Pumpkin Spice Latte, with the comforting seasonal flavors of fall and the approaching winter along with the steadying energy of turmeric. I make this rustic, nutrient-dense treat extra special by adding a dollop of plant-based whipped cream and a sprinkling of freshly ground nutmeg. Leaving my phone on silent in the other room, I take it with me to join my family by the fire. I hope that this recipe also inspires you to unplug, slow down, and enter with open arms the quiet moments this winter season brings. May it sustain us as the fullness of the sun slowly begins to return. Turmeric Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe Serves 2 1 ½ cups milk of choice (I recommend oat milk) 1 tbsp virgin coconut oil 2 tbsp good quality maple syrup 1 1/2 heaping tbsp pumpkin puree ¼ tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg ¼ tsp ginger powder ½ tsp Georgia Gold™ turmeric powder of choice Optional: shot of espresso, dollop of plant-based whipped topping Combine the first seven ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer on the stove. Add in the turmeric powder, and whisk vigorously. Cover and let sit for at least five minutes to let the flavors marry and to activate the turmeric. If you are craving an extra jolt, add in a splash of your favorite espresso or coffee. Savor outdoors as you observe the signs of changing seasons.
